Learn How to Parawing Foil

Wanting to learn how to conquer this amazing new water sport, well you've come to the right location.

Our Step by Step guide to learn to Parawing Foil

In our step by step guide, we’ll take you through the basics of getting up, riding the swell and going up wind.

The basics of learning to get up

Launch the Wing

You’ll want to start off in decent, consistant wind. We’d recommend from 17-25 knots to begin with. Find a spot that is relatively flat and is safe to paddle out to an area where you won’t be in danger from other water crafts.

Once out and on your board, start by firmly gripping the edge of your wing. With a confident motion, launch it into the air.

Get to Your Knees

Once the wing is airborne, position yourself securely on your board and move up to your knees. Use this time to steady yourself and prepare for the next step.

Rise to Your Feet

Transition smoothly from your knees to your feet. Ensure your balance is stable before proceeding.

Angle Your Direction

Instead of heading straight downwind, position yourself at a slight angle. This approach makes it easier to gain momentum and prepare for takeoff.

Catch a Bump and a Gust

Look for a small bump on the water and wait for a gust of wind. These will give you the lift and speed you need to get moving.

Start Pumping

Begin pumping to generate additional momentum and keep the foil engaged.

Depower and Find a Bump

Once you’re gliding, depower the wing and focus on finding the next bump to ride. Adjust your line to maximize efficiency and enjoyment.

Step-by-Step Guide: Riding bumps and swell

Focus on the Bump

Shift your attention to the swell ahead. Your goal is to ride the bump smoothly, letting the natural energy of the water carry you forward.

Simplify the Process

Remember, you’ve already conquered the hardest part = taking off. Without the need for a paddle, you can now fully focus on refining your swell riding skills.

Avoid Packing Up Completely

For beginners, it’s best not to pack up the wing entirely. Keeping it ready for use allows you to stay in control if conditions change or if you lose momentum.

Relaunch When Necessary

If you run out of pumping energy or options to continue riding, simply relaunch the wing. A quick redeployment will get you moving again without much effort.

Keep Practicing

Practice this cycle of riding, relaunching, and continuing to ride bumps. Each attempt will build your confidence and refine your skills for longer, smoother runs.

Step-by-Step Guide: Riding upwind

Set Your Direction

Begin by looking upwind and steering upwind. The wing is designed to handle upwind travel efficiently, so focus on maintaining a steady angle.

Manage Without a Harness

If you’re not using a harness, be prepared for some extra strain on one hand. Embrace the freedom of movement while keeping control of the wing.

Identify the Final Bump

Once you have travelled up wind for the desired distance, now scan for a bump you can ride back down wind. Depower the wing when you’re ready to transition to riding the swell.

Decide Whether to Pack Up

If conditions allow, you can pack up the wing after riding the bump. However, on light wind days or with fewer bumps, or if you’re starting out, keep the wing deployed for assistance.
